One way to celebrate an anniversary is through introspection. Perhaps this is also something Jakarta can do as it prepares to celebrate its 498th anniversary on June 22, 2025.
This year, Jakarta is celebrating its anniversary with the tagline “JAKARTA: A GLOBAL AND CULTURED CITY.” One way to bring this vision to life is by supporting SME entrepreneurs in the metropolitan city, particularly those whose businesses strongly reflect Jakarta’s cultural heritage.
Here are some of the hopes of SME entrepreneurs for Jakarta’s 2025 anniversary celebration.
Jakarta Increasingly Supports SME Entrepreneurs

One of the centers for preserving Betawi culture, which also serves as a hub combining economic ventures and cultural heritage, is Setu Babakan.
Here, hundreds of vendors operate within the Betawi Cultural Village Management Area. They are allowed to run their businesses for free, thanks to support and guidance from Jakpreneur.
Although they no longer need to pay for rental space, financial support is not the only assistance vendors need from the government. One of the most crucial needs is capital, especially for small vendors like Zahrudin, a seller of Betawi-style egg crust (kerak telor).
SME entrepreneurs need capital that can adapt to the unpredictable nature of their business income. As is well known, SME earnings can fluctuate greatly, so fixed installment payments can be very burdensome.
Another hope of SME entrepreneurs is for the Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI) to provide strategic trading locations with affordable rent. This is because vendors cannot rely solely on government-provided free spaces—they also need to operate in busy areas, such as shopping centers.
Although the Jakarta Provincial Government currently provides many temporary trading locations (loksem), it is hoped that these spaces will be made more attractive. For example, by incorporating unique characteristics and distinct features, they can become major draws for tourists and the public.
Then there’s the issue of business legality. Many SME entrepreneurs actually want their businesses to be legally recognized, with documents such as a Business Identification Number (NIB), halal certification, and trademark rights.
However, the complexity and lengthy process of obtaining these documents often discourage many entrepreneurs from pursuing them. It is hoped that the process will be simplified so that more SME entrepreneurs can complete it.
Finally, they hope that the Jakarta Provincial Government continues to ensure that JakLingko transportation remains free or zero-fare. This service is considered very helpful for small vendors to save on expenses when purchasing supplies for their businesses.
Government Support During Jakarta’s Anniversary

In fact, the government is fully aware of the presence of SME entrepreneurs in Jakarta. Even during anniversaries like this, the government ensures that SMEs are included and supported.
This was demonstrated at the Jakarta Future Festival (JFF) 2025, held from June 13–15, 2025, at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Cikini, Central Jakarta. At the event, two SME entrepreneurs supported by Jakpreneur under the Jakarta Provincial Social Service also participated.
They are Cumi Candu Cibubur, which sells grilled squid dishes with distinctive flavors and fresh-squeezed orange juice, and Ogie Drinks, offering a variety of trendy beverages such as Thai tea and mojitos.
According to Dewi Aryati Ningrum, Head of the Social Welfare Development Division at the Jakarta Social Service, the participation of Jakpreneur-supported SMEs is a tangible form of government support for SME development in Jakarta.
She mentioned that a platform as large as the Jakarta Future Festival 2025 provides SME entrepreneurs with an opportunity to showcase their products, expand their networks, and contribute to Jakarta’s development as a global city.
In fact, the participation of Jakpreneur-supported SMEs under the DKI Social Service can also serve as a stepping stone to introduce local entrepreneurs to a wider market. This can motivate SME owners to continue innovating and developing their businesses.
