Different Types of Obligatory Fasting

In Islam, fasting is divided into two main categories: obligatory fasts and Sunnah fasts. Obligatory fasting is the type that every Muslim is required to observe, and neglecting it without a valid excuse can be sinful. Here are some types of obligatory fasting along with their virtues.

1. Ramadan Fasting

Ramadan fasting is observed throughout the entire month of Ramadan. It is obligatory for every Muslim who has reached puberty, possesses sound reasoning, and is physically capable of fasting. Its virtues are numerous: sins are forgiven, good deeds are multiplied, and the gates of hell are sealed.

2. Nazar Fasting

Nazar fasting is a type of fast that a person voluntarily undertakes as a vow to Allah. Those who make such a vow commit to fasting according to their promise if their supplication is answered. The virtue of this fast lies in demonstrating sincere commitment to fulfilling one’s promise and expressing gratitude to Allah SWT.

3.Expiatory Fasting

Expiatory fasting is a penalty or atonement for violating Islamic rules. For example, it may be required for breaking an oath, unintentional killing, or engaging in marital relations during the daytime in Ramadan. Its virtue lies in serving as a means to expiate sins and offering a Muslim an opportunity to repent and correct their mistakes.

4. Qadha Fasting

Qadha fasting is the fast observed to make up for missed Ramadan fasts due to valid religious exemptions, such as illness, travel, or being pregnant and/or breastfeeding. Its virtue lies in fulfilling one's duty to Allah and ensuring that the obligations of Ramadan are maintained.

Different Types of Sunnah Fasting

In addition to obligatory fasting, Islam also encourages Sunnah fasting to enhance piety and improve the quality of worship. Here are the various types of Sunnah fasting along with their virtues.

1. Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays

This fast is a practice of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that is recommended for his followers. It is believed that a person’s deeds are examined on Mondays and Thursdays, which is why the Prophet desired to have his actions assessed while he was fasting.

2. Ayyamul Bidh Fasting

This fast is observed in the middle of each Hijri month, specifically on the 13th, 14th, and 15th. Whoever practices it will have their good deeds rewarded tenfold, as if they had been fasting continuously.

4. Fasting on Ashura

Ashura fasting is observed on the 10th of Muharram to commemorate the deliverance of Prophet Musa (Moses) and his people from the pursuit of Pharaoh. Its virtue is that it can expiate the sins of the past year. However, to distinguish it from the Jewish tradition of fasting on the 10th of Muharram, Muslims are also encouraged to observe the Tasu'a fast on the 9th of Muharram.

5. Sya’ban Fasting

The Prophet frequently fasted during the month of Sya’ban. The virtue of this fast lies in its role as spiritual preparation for entering Ramadan, and it coincides with Nisfu Sya’ban, the mid-month night.

6. Syawal Fasting

Syawal Fasting is observed for 6 days in the month of Syawal, following Eid al-Fitr. Whoever observes these fasts is considered as having fasted for an entire year. Syawal Fasting also serves as an opportunity to maintain piety after Ramadan has ended.

7. Fasting on Arafah

Fasting on Arafah is recommended on the 9th of Dzulhijjah for Muslims who are not performing Hajj. Its great virtue is that it expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.

8. Fasting During the Sacred Months

The sacred months are those that are revered and considered pure, namely Dhu al-Qa'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab. Increasing fasting during these months is a Sunnah recommended by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
